Kimbilio runs a hairdressing training salon for teenage mums who have been living with their babies on the streets of Lubumbashi. Kimbilio provides accommodation and a five month course in hairdressing and beauty. On successful completion, Kimbilio provides the students with a hairdressing kit so they can set up their own hairdressing business. We have seen much success with graduates able to financially support themselves and their children rather than being dependent on sexually exploitation.
Many teenage girls living on the streets are victims of sexual exploitation. For many of them it is a means to survive. This results in trauma, unplanned pregnancy and sexual health related issues. Many girls are unable to break out of this cycle of abuse and dependency.
Providing teenage mums with hairdressing and beauty training offers them the opportunity to break out of the cycle of abuse and dependency and have a positive method of earning a living.
Enabling teenage mothers the chance to break out of dependence on sexual exploitation provides them with better opportunities in life. It also enables their children to grow up in a supported environment rather than on the streets where their lives began. This will ensure in the long term they have better life chances and opportunities of being integrated within society rather than on the margins and living in abject poverty.
