This project will provide farming tools (hoes, watering cans, pangas, gumboots, rakes), high-yield vegetable seeds, as well as critical modern farming knowledge to 500 refugee youths in the Adjumani refugee settlement of Uganda to help them produce their own food and earn income. The goal is to promote self-reliance and address acute food shortages among refugee households. Targeted youth are child mothers, child heads of households, orphaned youth, and youth with disabilities.
70% of over 220,000 refugees living at Adjumani Refugee settlement are young people, the majority being younger than 18. Due to dwindling global funding, the UN World Food Program recently announced excluding many of these refugees from receiving monthly food and cash rations. This is adding to the already worsening situation of hunger and malnutrition among refugees in Uganda. The lack of access to necessary farming tools and skills to enable them produce their own food is a big challenge.
Voice for Humanity Uganda is providing critical farming tools such as handheld hoes, Gamboots, pangas, watering cans, and quick maturing vegetable seeds to targeted refugee youth especially orphans, disabled and the ill/malnorished along with training and mentorship on good farming practices. Since 2023, We have enabled over 250 Youths to produce their own food, earn income and become self reliant by giving them relevant tools and resources they need to lead productive lives and be food secure.
The project enables the refugee households to become self-reliant (less dependent on aid support), food secure, healthy and economically independent. Cases of malnutrition and poor health related to food deficiencies have been reduced among the targeted households. This project generally aligns with the UN and government of Uganda's refugee strategy of ensuring refugees become self reliant and engage in productive sustainable means of livelihoods.
