The project objectives as earlier envisioned are on course. Funds received from GlobalGiving was used to complete phase one of the project, borehole drilling that received direct funding from another donor. Upon completion and drilling exploration, based on quality and quantity of availed water, our potentials and new opportunities inherent in the drilled borehole arose. This water was sampled to government Chemist for chemical physical analysis and was recommended to be clear with good mineral content suitable for domestic use. The need for a water tower to enable us supply this water on-campus and to the immediate community was evident.
Some of the demonstratable benefits realized thus far include: Reduced time-frame which is spent by the students walking long distance to go fetch water from 30-50 minutes to 5-10minutes; Reduced rate of infection of water-borne disease like cholera, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea and typhoid by 60%.; Enhanced hygiene and cleanliness on and around campus; and guaranteed clean, reliable, safe and sufficient water.
As mentioned earlier, with the quantity and quality of water obtained, a water tower, a water bottling plant, a digital kiosk, are inevitable critical components of the project. A hybrid solar system to complement the unreliable Kenya Power and Lighting Supply Company (KPLC) is key towards supplying continuous power to the already installed hybrid pump complete with 5.5 KW motor and controller. This pump adopts the dynamic Maximum Power Point Tracking (VI MPPT) with prompt response, high efficiency and stable performance, thereby necessitating the urgent need of continuous power supply. This will enable the beneficiaries to receive constant supply of water as needed.
It is envisioned that the water bottling plant and digital kiosk will be the first income generating activities emanating from the borehole project. This will help fund maintenance cost and pay salaries and wages to personnel working directly in the project. Further revenue generated, will be utilized towards uplifting infrastructural activities of the college. In addition, subsequent revenue from coming years will be reserved primarily for providing scholarship to the poor and needy students from the Local Community.
We look to a future with a Solar Powered pumped water into our residence halls, restrooms, kitchen, and dinning. This saves on study time, provide clean safe drinking water, enough water to maintain and keep our campus green all-year-round. For sustainability, we may also harvest and bottle this water for sell; thus, generating some income to the institute.
