July 2024 Update: Malnourished children in Haiti

By Aicha Belabbes | Annual Giving Coordinator

On behalf of all our staff and patients, thank you for your generous giving to Partners In Health(PIH)! We are so grateful for your partnership.

Despite the unprecedented challenges facing the Haitian people, many of our Zanmi Lasante (ZL), as PIH is known is Haiti, colleagues are feeling cautiously optimistic. The current situation is marginally less chaotic compared to the spring. Unfortunately, gangs continue to spread violence while obstructing the movement of food, fuel, and medical supplies.

Your support is making it possible for Zanmi Lasante, to continue provide malnutrition screening, treatment, and education to respond to this crisis.

Nourimanba, ZL’s ready-to-use therapeutic food for combating child malnutrition (produced in partnership with local farmers), experienced a five month production pause due to difficulty importing key ingredients. Thankfully, the long-awaited shipping containers were finally released from port and production is once again operating as usual. Clinicians and community health workers continue to address malnutrition through mobile clinics and other initiatives throughout communities in the Artibonite region.

The mobile clinics are critical to the program because they allow our teams to reach remote communities and identify malnourished children earlier, so treatment can be delivered before health problems turn fatal. However, amid the current national instability, it has become exceedingly challenging for our teams to travel with mobile clinics, as they face fuel shortages, violence, and unpredictable roadblocks that restrict the team’s movement.

Despite this, our nutrition team has persisted, finding ways to reach our patients at home–whether by rescheduling clinic visits or finding alternative routes. Their dedication has provided lifesaving care for families all over Haiti.

Haiti’s population continues to be vulnerable to malnutrition, facing food insecurity, poor infrastructure–particularly in terms of water and sanitation–and, currently, political and economic instability. We can’t thank you enough for your continued, critical support of our patients and staff in Haiti.
