'This project will help fund our efforts to address child malnutrition in Haiti. Our initiatives include funding the creation of Nourimanba, a ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) made of locally grown peanuts, milk powder, canola oil, sugar, and vitamins. Produced in a Haitian factory, this RUTF adheres to World Health Organization standards. Additionally, the project will provide support to our medical staff who work around-the-clock in hospitals and local clinics to keep children fed.
The ongoing instability in Haiti has led to a rapid increase in malnutrition, with an estimated 4.9 million people facing acute food insecurity, due to a deadly combination of gang violence, inflation and dependence on food imports. 1 out of every 2 children in Haiti need humanitarian assistance, which is a record-breaking number. A quarter of children in Haiti are malnourished. 66% of Haitian children suffer from anemia. Both chronic and acute malnutrition have increased in recent years.
PIH provides high quality malnutrition screenings and treatments at hospitals, clinics, mobile clinics and home visits. Nourimanba is a ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) made of locally grown peanuts, milk powder, canola oil, sugar and vitamins, following World Health organization standards. This is the food that is given to our patients, produced at PIH's own factory. This food helps restore the health and happiness of our patients, but we need your help, due to increased food costs.
During FY23, 91,575 kg of Nourimamba was produced which surpassed our goal of 90,000 kg. 3,594 children received this treatment in the last quarter of FY23 and we need your support to keep growing. Beginning in December 2022, physicians at HUM initiated malnutrition treatment at the cholera treatment centers, ensuring that children are referred to pediatricians and enrolled in the hospital's nutrition program. We must expand the mobile clinic to Boucan Carre and increase production of the food.
