ASI No Jugamos: Protecting through storytelling

During the first quarter of 2025, the ASI No Jugamos program team carried out various in-person activities with preschool children and their protective figures (mothers, fathers, or caregivers). In total, during this quarter, we reached 127 protective figures and 48 school-aged children.

As part of these actions, we held two feedback meetings for protective figures, where we presented the results of the workshops conducted between September and November 2024. These sessions allowed protective figures to understand the skills acquired by both children and adults to prevent and address child sexual violence, as well as to identify areas for improvement to strengthen their knowledge and protective tools. The feedback sessions took place in two preschools in Malinalco.

Additionally, we conducted two storytelling activities:

We presented the story "El día que mamá se transformó en dragón" at the Beatriz Espejo Preschool in the San Juan neighborhood, aimed at children and their protective figures.
At the Vasco de Quiroga Preschool in San Martín, we performed the play "Una visita diferente". We also delivered a awareness talk for protective figures on preventing child sexual violence.

Storytelling is a powerful tool for preventing child sexual violence because it allows the topic to be addressed in an accessible and sensitive way for children. Through stories, metaphors, and relatable characters, key messages are reinforced regarding respect for their bodies, the importance of expressing discomfort, and trusting protective figures to ask for help. Additionally, storytelling encourages family discussions and creates a safe space to talk about these issues without generating fear or anxiety in children.

Knowing the profund power storytelling has, our team has been undergoing training to develop an original creative story focused on preventing child sexual violence.

We have also been working on descriptive guidelines and the call for applications to begin training the second generation of the Network of Spokeswomen, which will launch in April.

ASI NO JUGAMOS: Project report july-october 2024

The support received from each of our donors continues to bear fruit. Thanks to this, in recent months we have carried out the following activities as part of our efforts to prevent and address sexual violence against children in Mexico:

Training adults: We trained the Smurfit Westrock Foundation team in the use of the Toolbox for prevention. They work with dozens of children, adolescents, and youth in their Community Center located in Ecatepec, State of Mexico.
As a result of the workshop, 58% of participants increased their knowledge, and 81% reported feeling more capable and confident in preventing and responding to cases of Child Sexual Violence.
We also received positive feedback from them, such as:
"It was a gratifying experience where I recognized many things about myself, in addition to broadening my perspective and sensitivity towards everything and everyone. It seems like a difficult topic, but by working on it with awareness, it is possible to make a difference."
Workshops in pre-schools: We began the Toolbox workshops for children aged 5 and 6 in two preschools in the municipality of Malinalco. In both preschools, we are also training teachers as well as mothers and fathers. The following participants are currently being trained in these workshops:
- 64 preschool children (34 girls and 30 boys)
- 57 adults trained: 13 teachers and 44 caregivers, totaling 51 women and 6 men
Psychological Support: In September, two patients successfully completed their therapy process and were discharged. In a satisfaction survey of those who received psychological support, 100% rated the service as "very good," including its accessibility, usefulness, and the professionalism of the staff providing care.
Photography Contest: We are currently preparing the Photography Contest and Exhibition "Capturing Safe Spaces", aimed at encouraging children, adolescents, and young people in Malinalco to identify the places where they feel protected, cared for, and secure. This contest is part of our community communication campaign and seeks to help children and adolescents strengthen their protective factors against risky situations by recognizing the support networks they currently have. The call for entries began in October, and the award ceremony and photo exhibition will be taking place on November 16 at the Malinalxóchitl Cultural Center.

Taller en preescolar

During the April to June 2024 quarter, at Imaginalco we continued implementing the "ASI no Jugamos" (We don't play like that) program day to day, in order to prevent and detect child sexual abuse in Malinalco.

In these months, we conducted the "Toolbox Workshops" for Secondary, High School and Kindergarten, resumed biweekly meetings of the Network of Spokeswomen, and provided psychological and legal support to children, adolescents, and young adults who require this assistance.

MOST RELEVANT RESULTS OF THESE ACTIVITIES

The "Toolbox Workshops" for Secondary and High School were implemented with adolescents aged 12 to 18 who participate in the Esperanza Azteca Youth Orchestra of the San Martín neighborhood. Our evaluation tools showed that 100% of the adolescents who consistently participated in the sessions increased their protective factors related to the prevention of child sexual violence.

As for the workshops with Kindergarden children, we attended to more than 90 children aged 4 to 5 from the Antonio Alzate and Beatriz Espejo Kindergartens. As a result of the intervention, 77% increased their protective factors against child sexual violence. In addition to the children, 13 teachers from both kindergartens received training for the prevention of child sexual violence, and 85% of them increased their skills to prevent, detect, and respond to the issue if it were to occur in their institution.

Regarding psychological support, there are currently 7 patients, one of whom, in addition to receiving psychological support, also received legal support. As a result of both interventions, she presented her case in court and won in her favor.
