Menstruation is a taboo subject in Burkina Faso. Mother do not talk about it to their daughter. When the menstruations come it is a chock for the girls.
We have conducted awareness meeting in 4 primary schools for girls aged 11 to 14.
Not easy to have the girls open to talk about a taboo subject. When asked in the first village if some of the girls had their menstruations, nobody answered. Then the person doing leading the meeting said that there is a gift for those with menstruation. Only then girls dared to raise their hand.
The "lecture" used is the one developped by the association Days for Girls. Even the female teacher learned during the presentation.
We cannot be in the villages all the time. We haev appointyed one of the female teacher for the follow up on the presentation.
Part of the program is also to provide girls with a washable protection also developped by days for Girls and produced in Burkina Faso by the association Actions pour les Besoins des Femmes (ABF).
Those kits will allow girls to stay in school at time of menstruation, to have a better hygiene and a better self esteem.
Help us to do more of those cessions in primary schools and to distribute more kits of protection.
Thank you
Besides the fact of providing washable protection for menstruation, we beleive that it is important to help girls understand their body.
This is not done by their parents and often not done at school.
At the time of distribution of the protection menstruation kits to school girls and to women, we give a lecture on how their body is working.
In include the organe of reproduction, the cycle of menstruation, how the baby are made, hygiene of the intimate part of the body, how to use the provided kits and how to defend yourself against a man too agressive.
We do not talk in detail about contarceptions methods. However we explain that family planning is possible.
Our objective is to decrease the teen pregnancy. We are doing those awareness meeting in collaboration with the midwife of the local medical dispensary.
The presentation used has been provided by Days for Girls.
There are still many girls without protection and without knowing their body.
Please help us to give a chance to young girls to plan their future and also to women be protected.
Thank you.
Menstruation is not really a good period of the month where ever you are.
In Africa it is probably worse that in more developped continents.
The subject of menstruations is a taboo in most of the families in Burkina Faso. They come as a surprise to the girls which can be very disturbing. Hopefully the girl will have a sister or a friend who can help her understand what is happening.
Then girls do not have real protection which can even make it more dramatic if she has stains on her cloth.
ASAP help women and girls to better understand their body and provide proper protection with a kit developped by Days for Girls and produced in the workshop of Actions pour les Besoins des Femmes (ABF) in Bobo Dioulasso.
This is really a very important project so that women and girls can have a normal life all the time, do not miss school and keep their self esteem.
We need your support to reach our objectives of 2.000 girls / women who can be helped.
Thank you communicate this project to your family and friends.
