''Promoting quality education in rural primary schools in Livingstonia - Malawi'' is a community initiative facilitated by Mtende Homecraft Foundation trying to reduce students drop-outs in rural primary schools. The project has been organized to source and distribute school uniform, learning and teaching materials in support of 9600 learners who cannot afford to buy school basic materials for their education and 10 schools have been identified within Livingstonia primary education zone.
Following the adoption of free primary education in Malawi, there is steady increased learners enrollment in schools especially in rural areas where over 90% of the population lives. This has affected the quality of education as there is an imbalance on teacher pupils' ratio, number of classrooms, inadequate teaching and learning materials and not forgetting poor sanitation among others. The situation has not spared Livingstonia - Phoka Primary Education Zones where school materials are scarce.
By sourcing and distributing school writing, teaching and learning materials in support of 9600 learners in 10 primary schools will help students to attend and remain in classes. Currently, there is ratio of 1 textbook being shared by 20 students hence poor child performance especially in reading and practical works and this is why this project has been organized to solve the problem regarding to shortage of stationery and other learning materials in primary schools.
The long term impact is the reduction of school drop-out rate and child abuse which is at 60% among learners due to lack of parental care. Currently, there is high increased of child abuse and exploitation due to such school drop-outs and the project is focused to reduce teenage marriages, child abuse and exploitation which are commonly barriers in achieving girl child education in rural schools where such challenges are being practiced. So the overall impact is promotion of quality education.
