This project will increase food production of 10,000 households through provision of agricultural extension services, farm inputs and credit facility. It will also improve the methods farmers use to increase agricultural production and ensure food security. The project will mobilize communities into groups to train them in income generating activities and provide credit to farmers so they may become more self-sufficient with their personal farming that provides substance for the communities.
There is inadequate crop and animal production in homesteads caused by poor soil and substance farming. Farming is done on small plots of land with poorly managed soils that have lost most of its fertility due to leaching, repeated cultivation and soil erosion. Farmers use poor farming methods due to lack of skills. The needs assessment survey conducted in 2015, showed 50% of households earn a mean of annual $60 making it difficult for families to meet their basic needs.
Farmers will be mobilized into groups to facilitate easy provision of agricultural extension, provision of agricultural loans and marketing produce.Farmers will be trained in SYB (Start Your Business), IYB record keeping, loan utilization, how to market the produce to mention but a few. Then farmers will be encouraged to open up income generating projects which will help them to run agriculture as business and be transformed from subsistence farming to commercial farming.
Farmers will be trained to make and utilize natural manure in order to improve the soil fertility. This will go a long way in boosting agricultural production. This is affordable to every farmer. Farmers will be trained on how to conserve soil and water by preventing soil erosion through means of mulching, crop rotation, digging drainage channels etc.
