Summary

The South African Human Rights Commission found, that child hunger in the Eastern Cape should be declared under the Disaster Management Act. In 2023, it was reported that 25% of the province's children are stunted. In 2023, close on 2000 cases of severe acute malnutrition in children were diagnosed in the Eastern Cape, of these, over 100 died. In our own city of Gqeberha, recent statistics show that over 300 000 people go hungry in our city every month. This is a crisis!

Challenge

Recent statistics show that over 300 000 people go hungry in our city every month, the majority being children. This affects school attendance as children are merely too hungry to concentrate and thus stay home to hustle for food. Township play schools are well familiar with malnourished toddlers, many dropped off with no lunch nor snack for the entire day. In 2017 there were 226 reported child deaths due to malnutrition in our province and more than 2000 hospitalisations. This is a crisis.

Solution

Love Story exists to feed, clothe and bring solution to the poverty in our city. Currently Love Story serves in the region of 30 000 meals per month to the homeless and destitute, with 80% being served to children. We rely solely on the public for donations to help us do the work we do and expand our reach.

Long-Term Impact

This project will be feeding more than 200 children in impoverished areas, enabling them to grow, learn and flourish.
