Adding the finishing touches to Karinoro building

Access to safe, inclusive learning environments remains a significant challenge for many rural communities in southeast Madagascar. Through the Sekoly project, SEED is working alongside communities to improve educational outcomes by providing quality school infrastructure, safe sanitation facilities, and reliable access to water. The transformation of Karinoro Primary School is now entering its final stages, with construction work nearing completion and the project’s impact already becoming visible across the school site.

The new three-classroom school building, together with the attached teacher accommodation, is now structurally complete. Windows, doors, and roofing have all been installed, creating a secure and welcoming environment for both students and teachers. Inside the classrooms, 105 student desk-benches and four teacher table-and-chair sets have been delivered and assembled, meaning the learning spaces are now fully furnished and ready for use. The remaining works focus on final finishes, including paintwork, which is currently underway and expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Alongside the school building, the new gender-segregated latrine block and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) facility are also approaching completion. All major construction activities have now been finished, and the team is currently installing handrails to improve accessibility for all users. Once this work is complete, the facilities will receive their final coats of paint.

The final element of the project will be the installation of a rainwater harvesting system, which will provide a reliable source of water for the school community and support improved hygiene practices. Once this installation has occurred, the project will be fully complete.

The Sekoly team is incredibly excited to see this WASH and education infrastructure project come to fruition. Thanks to continued donor support, Karinoro Primary School is set to benefit from improved learning environments, enhanced sanitation facilities, and reliable access to water, creating lasting improvements for students, teachers, and the wider community for years to come.
