This nine-month project focuses on Karinoro Primary School, where there are currently overcrowded classrooms, unsafe latrines, and no clean drinking water. SEED will construct a fully furnished three-classroom building, five gender-segregated latrines with a dedicated Menstrual Hygiene Management facility, a 10,000 litre rainwater harvesting system, on-site teacher accommodation, deliver WASH education, and offset the project's carbon emissions through a community-managed tree-planting site.
Currently, Karinoro Primary School faces severe challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, poor sanitation, lack of clean water, teacher absenteeism, and vulnerability to climate disasters. With only two classrooms for 203 students, students take turns receiving lessons, which highly limits their classroom time. The school has unsafe latrines and no clean drinking water, leading to health risks. Moreover, teachers have to travel long distances to school, causing frequent absences.
SEED will repair the existing school building and construct a fully furnished three-classroom building, five gender-segregated latrines with a dedicated Menstrual Hygiene Management facility, a 10,000 litre rainwater harvesting system, and on-site teacher accommodation. In addition, SEED will deliver WASH education using a train-the-trainer model to ensure long-term sustainability and offset the project's carbon emissions through a community-managed tree-planting site.
This project will directly improve the education, health, and well-being of 203 students and six teachers. They will have more classroom space and full-day lessons to maximize learning opportunities. Moreover, they will have access to clean water, reducing illness and improving school attendance. There will be private and secure sanitation facilities, particularly encouraging female students to attend school during menstruation.
