Karinoro Primary School: Construction Complete!

By Lorin Thompson | Programmes & Office Assistant

With support from GlobalGiving donors, SEED has completed new classroom construction, teacher accommodation and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities at Karinoro Primary School in southeastern Madagascar.

The existing school building has been repaired and a new three-classroom block constructed, providing additional space for 150 students. Classrooms have been furnished with desks, blackboards and storage cupboards. New teacher accommodation includes living space and an office, providing teachers with dedicated facilities at the school.

Five gender-segregated latrines have been built, alongside drinking and handwashing stations. A dedicated menstrual health facility provides female students with a private space. Working with Tatirano Social Enterprise, SEED also installed a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system to supply water to the drinking and handwashing stations and menstrual health facility. Painted handprints, murals and footprints along the paths to handwashing stations encourage students to practise good hygiene.

All 202 students received water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) education. SEED also trained teachers and community representatives in hygiene practices, water treatment and facility maintenance, and established a 15-member WASH committee to oversee the facilities. Teachers will continue delivering WASH lessons in future school years, helping sustain this work beyond the project.

To offset the estimated 72,186 kg of CO emissions from construction, SEED planted 326 Moringa trees. Monitoring confirmed that 326 healthy trees survived. A further 326 eucalyptus seedlings were planted at a community resource-use site in response to local requests.

These facilities provide students and teachers with additional classroom space and access to water and sanitation, while WASH education and committee training support their continued use and maintenance.
