Overcrowding in prisons narrow the existential horizon to the mere survival. In most pavilions, psychopharmaceuticals are consumed to escape states of depression or anxiety. Additionally, all inmates arrive with deteriorated or broken family bonds. They possess formal education below the country's average, lacking fundamental tools of self-awareness, personal development, and interpersonal connections. This makes subsequent social and occupational integration very unlikely.
The initial impact is a decrease in violence within the prison environment, facilitated by the fact that the participants (Espartanos) reside together in the same pavilion. They adhere to stringent coexistence regulations, such as refraining from violence and theft, peaceful conflict resolution, and more. Rugby in addition to spirituality, education, and employment impact in a change of minds and hearts.
The persons who participate in the programs experience a significant reduction in the recidivism rate, decreasing from 65% to less than 5%.
