Keeping Care Moving in Afghanistan Through a Hard

By Stephanie Gallagher | Project Leader

Afghanistan remained one of the toughest places in the world to deliver healthcare this summer. For many women, the barriers aren't medical, they're practical: no clinic nearby, no trained provider, no way to get birth spacing counseling or safe contraception. Border closures and supply disruptions made that gap even harder to close, yet our teams kept services running.

Our community midwife network in Kabul and Balkh has grown to 249 active providers, who together reached over 23,000 women and girls with family planning, antenatal, postnatal, and delivery care. At a women's health awareness camp in Dasht-e-Barchi, dozens of women who had never had access to an ultrasound or birth-spacing counseling received both - many for the first time - while 35 frontline midwives and doctors sharpened their skills through hands-on training. The impact shows in the numbers as well: in June, our network delivered 1,521 Couple Years of Protection (CYP) - a standard measure of contraceptive protection provided - and by July that had nearly doubled to 2,898. A newly onboarded staff have also launched an expansion plan to reach more outlets, build distributor partnerships, and rebuild product visibility nationwide.

Every midwife trained and every woman reached brings us closer to a country where pregnancy doesn't come with life-threatening risk. As we expand into 17 additional provinces, this is the model we're scaling, and it's one your support helps make possible.

Please consider supporting maternal health services in Afghanistan. Thank you!
