This project will expand DKT Afghanistan's birth spacing and maternal health services into the 17 provinces where we are not yet operating. By scaling our sustainable private-sector model, supplying affordable contraceptives, training providers, and supporting community midwives, we will ensure women nationwide can access culturally appropriate reproductive healthcare and prevent unintended pregnancies.
Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world (521/100,000). Many women in Afghanistan lack consistent access to affordable contraception and trained reproductive health providers. Rural women face long travel distances, low health literacy, limited decision-making power, and frequent stock-outs. Without reliable birth spacing services, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and preventable maternal deaths remain high.
DKT will expand its licensed pharmaceutical distribution network into 17 additional provinces, supplying and training new pharmacies, clinics, and midwives with quality and affordable reproductive health services and products. We will train providers in birth spacing and post-abortion care and introduce our fully registered contraceptive portfolio to underserved communities, building sustainable local supply chains for the future.
By strengthening private-sector distribution and training local providers, this project will prevent unsafe abortions and significantly reduce maternal deaths, empowering women across Afghanistan to make informed decisions about their families for generations to come.
