Each year we give around 200 pregnant goats to widows and orphans in rural NE Uganda. We work in conjuction with the local government leaders and the tribal leaders. The head of the tribe selects the most needy receipient. They are then trained by the veterinarian from our partner NGO on how to care for the goat and its babies. They are to care for the babies until they are weaned. The first babies then go back to the NGO who raises them and gives them to another person in need. All future babies belong to the original recipient. They cannot eat the goats, they can only sell them or trade them. About half of the goats have more than one baby, so they can accumulate a herd in two or three years. The stories we get back from the widows or orphans are truly life changing. They provide funds for the orphan to attend school, build a nicer hut, trade for a milk cow or a bull. They have used the funds to buy a piece of land to grow a larger garden.
This is one of the most effective projects we operate in Uganda. Well worth your investment. Tell your friends!!
