DIABETES STATISTICS
- 1 in 3 American children born today face a future with diabetes if current trends continue.
- 233,619: The number of annual deaths due to diabetes in the United States according to death certificate reports from 2005 (Diabetes is likely to be underreported as a cause of death).
- 25.8 million: The estimated number of children and adults in the United States who have diabetes.
- 343,517: The estimated number of people in Oregon & SW Washington with diabetes (1/3 unaware they have it).
- 79 million: The estimated number of Americans with pre-diabetes – at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
- 676,204: The estimated number of Oregonian & SW Washington residents who have pre-diabetes.
- Hispanic/Latino Americans are 1.8 times more likely to have type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.
- African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.
- Direct and indirect costs of diabetes total $200 billion annually. One out of every ten health care dollars is spent on diabetes and its complications.
With your help, locally we are able to provide the following:
Diabetes EXPO
Held annually at the Oregon Convention Center, EXPO serves over 5,000 community members interested in the latest information on diabetes. While at this free event people have access to screenings, education, healthy eating and active living demonstrations, workshops and “Ask the Expert” consultations.
Safe at School
Last year, 178 schools and 1,333 school personnel throughout Oregon and SW Washington received free Safe at School training to ensure that children with diabetes remain safe while attending school.
Family Link
Family Link connects families who are learning to live with diabetes by providing newsletters, resources, training, parent mentors, and local social and educational events. The Jim Hansen Memorial Symposium is held each year at EXPO to educate and provide the latest information to parents and families of children with type 1 diabetes.
Annual Diabetes Practice Update (ADPU)
Conference held for medical professionals interested in the latest on diabetes care, research and education.
Living with Type 2 Diabetes
Free one-year program for people newly diagnosed with diabetes. Sign up at www.diabetes.org or call 1-800-DIABETES.
Stop Diabetes @ Work
A free employer hosted workplace wellness program provided by the American Diabetes Association to promote diabetes awareness, detection, management and education.
RESEARCH
The Association has been funding innovative research to combat diabetes since 1955. Currently funded research grants in Oregon total $1,276,634 and have been awarded to three researchers.
