Tour de Cure Raises $415,000!

Helen, one of our Champions to Stop Diabetes, shared her inspiration and the reason she came back in 2016 to ride in her 7^th Tour de Cure in Oregon. In her own words: my 15-year-old daughter Rachel is my inspiration. Rachel has had type 1 diabetes since 2007, and is a true champion who doesn’t let diabetes stop her -- a student, an athlete, a community volunteer, a singer, an artist, a great big sister to my son (who doesn't know life without her diabetes) and an all-around joy. This year was my 6th time signing up for the century distance (104 miles) and my 7th time doing Tour de Cure and SHE IS MY WHY.

Helen, along with more than 800 riders, walkers and volunteers, many with diabetes, participated in the 25^th Annual Tour de Cure event, presented by Fred Meyer, on Saturday, July 30^th at AmberGlen Park in Hillsboro.

We’ve raised $415,000 and counting towards our mission to Stop Diabetes during the cycling and walking event, but we’re not done yet and we need your support to help us reach our goal of $500,000!

Funds raised through our Tour de Cure support diabetes research and prevention initiatives, and programs to help people living with diabetes. In our own community, one in 10 Oregonians has diabetes, and more than 1 million others have prediabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to horrific complications, including heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke and amputation. Diabetes kills more Americans every year than AIDS and breast cancer combined.

Your hard work and dedication to our cause inspires us each day and gives participants, like Helen, continued hope and confidence that one day her daughter will live a life free from the burdens of diabetes. Our mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes can't be accomplished without amazing partners like you. The money raised for Tour de Cure makes a BIG IMPACT on diabetes education and prevention, research and advocacy taking place right here in our community by providing essential programs and support for the over 1 million people affected by diabetes in Oregon.

Step Out Merges with 25th Anniversary Tour de Cure

Ride or Walk to Stop Diabetes at the 25th Anniversary Tour de Cure on Saturday, July 30!

In celebration of Tour de Cure's 25 years of riding strong for people affected by diabetes, we are enhancing the Tour de Cure experience to bring in anyone and everyone who is passionate about finding a cure for diabetes. You can now WALK at Tour de Cure on the NEW 3 mile walk route.

Why I Walk - Meet Angi
My beautiful daughter lives everyday with type 1 diabetes. She's my hero and why we will be participating in Tour de Cure as a walking team on the new 3 mile walk route.

I walk down the hallway in silence so deep,
Keeping careful watch, as my little girl sleeps.

With meter in hand, I open the door,
Careful not to wake her as I slip cross the floor.

I sit on her bedside and brush her dark hair,
As she dreams of playing volleyball without one single care.

I hold her hand softly; her fingers so small,
I stop and I wonder why diabetes came to call.

While I watch her sleeping so peaceful and warm,
The forces insider her fight a never-ending storm.

Will she ever be free of the needles and blood testing?
I sit and wonder as she lay peacefully resting.

The beep of the meter breaks the silence of the night.
A small drop of blood tells me if everything's right.

The seconds count down to the final display.
I hate this darn meter, I'd love to throw it away.

The number is fine, one down and a lifetime to go,
As she turns in her sleep, will she ever know?

Why does this happen to someone so small?
My girl is my hero, but my baby most of all.

I walk down the hallway time passes by,
I sit in the dark silence and quietly sigh.

I have to stay strong, and for her I will fight.
We'll battle this disease with all our might!

I'll teach her to master and conquer this foe.
Diabetes will not stop her, I promise her so!

We are so grateful for the American Diabetes Association and the work they do on behalf of people living with this disease. Besides the work they do battling for a cure, my daughter has been a direct recipient of the Safe At School program, which has educated and equipped our teachers and staff to know risks and warning signs of a possible diabetic emergency and how to respond, giving us reassurance that my daughter will be monitored and cared for while at school. The Safe At School program has impacted our lives in a tangible and meaningful way.

Tour de Cure is the best way for us to help make sure programs like Safe At School continue to be funded and available to future kids and families. Plus, we love being surrounded by a network of people that understand the fight we fight everyday - as a person with diabetes or as a parent, friend or colleague who provides constant care and support.

Your registrationor contribution takes us one step closer to a cure, one step further in education, one step deeper into our commitment to Stop Diabetes...and each Tour de Cure shows my daughter that diabetes will not stop her, I promise her so!

2016 Tour de Cure Oregon/SW Washington Update

As we start the New Year in 2016, we want to thank our globalgiving donors for your generous support of our Tour de Cure cycling event in 2015. You made a huge difference in the lives of more than 345,000 in our communities with diabetes by helping to provide funding for advocacy and programs including, Safe at School, Stop Diabetes at Work, Living with Type 2 Diabetes and so much more. The 2015 Tour de Cure event raised over $400,000! Thank you for your support to make this happen.

In 2016 we must continue our work through Tour de Cure to raise funds as this every growing diseases continues to affect more than 29.1 million. The 2016 Tour de Cure will celebrate our 25th Anniversary! It will be held on July 30th in Hillsboro Oregon and our goal this year is to raise $500,000. We hope you will join us again in support of our mission which is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

There are many opportunities to participate in Tour de Cure:

Team Captains - Team Captains are the motivating force behind the success of Tour de Cure. They rally friends, family and co-workers to fundraise and reach team goals. They recruit riders and fundraisers to their team throughout the year and always have a great time on ride day.

Red Riders - Our Red Riders are participants living with diabetes. They are why we ride! Red Riders receive special promotions throughout the year and perks on ride day. At registration, if you are living with diabetes, make sure you select that you are a Red Rider to be part of this special group of riders! Tour de cure recognizes Red Riders as the heros on the day of the event.

Champions to Stop Diabetes - Our Champions are riders who raise $1,000 or more to Stop Diabetes. Champions receive special perks on ride day as well as a post-event party to celebrate their great fundraising efforts, including a chance to win a prize valued at $2,500+. Anyone can be a Champion to Stop Diabetes!

Team Red - Team Red welcomes everyone and anyone that wants to find a cure for diabetes. The idea behind Team Red is to provide the opportunity for individual riders with or without diabetes to have a designated team they can join or ban together in the fight to Stop Diabetes and to build the diabetes community.

The American Diabetes Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
