Polio Project - Last Two Homes!

By Charles Ward | Executive Director

Vets With A Mission is in the final phase of its “Polio Project," which is the repair and renovation of the last two homes of disabled polio victims in Ho Chi Minh City.

You will recall that these adults were children VWAM met, back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in Saigon, at Sister Jean Marie’s Polio Orphanage #5. With your help, we renovated seven dilapidated homes over the past 30 months! Now we have just two to go to complete the project.

With your donations and Global Giving’s help, VWAM has raised $21,337 toward the $33,167 goal. On average, the cost of repairing the first seven homes has been $3,048 each. This project so interested Global Giving that they sent their Southeast Asia Rep to visit them. He came away impressed and humbled by the experience.

Unfortunately, the last two are the most expensive and they were put on the back burner until now. It will take $11,830 to complete the renovation and repair of homes #8 and #9. That’s because #8 is a repair, while #9 is literally a total renovation.

In July, VWAM finished home #7 ahead of schedule. It may be possible to complete these final two houses by September 15th and 30th respectively, if VWAM can attract the support by August 15. That would be just ahead of the rainy season, I believe, and this is important due to floor flooding, cracks in walls, and leaking roofs.

Make sure you take a look at the photographs that show you how the finsihed product looks at home #7 in Go Van District, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam!
