On December 19, 2024, the World Cleanup Day China Case Release and the 10th anniversary commemoration of Pickup China hosted by Pickup China (Shanghai Pudong LIFE Environment Protection Promotion Center) were held in Shanghai. This conference is an important part of the annual cleaning conference hosted by Pickup China. The Chairman of Shanghai Pudong LIFE Environment Protection Promotion Center Feng Jiang, the founder of Pickup China Ziren Wang, Estonian Chargé d’Affaires to China Marti Mätas, SEE Foundation Environmental Protection Charity Industry Development Director Yiqing Wang, and Aifen Environmental Protection Center Director-General Hui Song attended the event.
In December 2023, the United Nations passed a resolution to officially declare World Cleanup Day (September 20) as a United Nations International Day. This year is the first year of World Cleanup Day as an international day and the seventh year it has been launched globally. As a bottom-up, global citizen campaign, the purpose of World Cleanup Day is to call on more people to work together to deal with the garbage problem on land, rivers and oceans.
Since 2018, Pickup China has continued to promote the implementation of World Cleanup Day in China, leading large-scale environmental cleanup actions across the country. Ziren Wang, the initiator of the project, said that Pickup China had previously tried related actions in China, but there was no effective model to learn from. "When we learned about the idea of 'cleaning the environment in one day' and its successful practice in many countries, we decided to introduce this model into China as well."
In the past seven years, Pickup China, as the general coordinating unit and partners, has mobilized a total of 1.62 million people to participate in World Cleanup Day in China, including 260,000 in 2024. The relevant activities aim to promote the improvement of public environmental protection awareness and changes in behavioral habits through picking up actions, and influence people around to protect the environment. At the same time, it also advocates reducing the amount of garbage at the source, sorting garbage, and reducing excessive consumption.
