Report #4 Access to Healthcare in Rural Haiti

Friends and Donors of the Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (APF) Clinic:

Thank you so much for supporting us throughout this year. Here in Haiti, as everywhere, it has certainly been a challenging one. In addition to COVID, Haiti also experienced much financial and political instability, and the rural sectors were hit hard.

Below is our final report on 2020 activities. In November and December ...

The APF Fondwa clinic saw 200 patients, of which 131 were under 5 years of age.

As motorcycles continue to become a major form of transportation and rural business, accidents persist and treatment is required at the clinic.

Sadly, there was one case of family violence in our community, with injuries.

In November, 50 mothers came to vaccinate their children, and 29 vaccines were administered. The vaccines are provided by the Haitian Ministry of Health. In December, 50 moms came, and 46 vaccinations were administered.

Common illnesses have not changed, the most frequent being arterial hypertension (20 patients) and diabetes mellitus (15 patients).

There continues to be a significant decrease in the number of people who consult for flu-like symptoms and respiratory diseases. There is a stigma and fear in the rural areas of being diagnosed as Covid-19. Local rural residents prefer the use of natural remedies, and shy away from COVID tests or hospital referrals.

Medicines at our clinic are still offered at cost.

Our beloved Dr. Elizabeth Brea had to leave Haiti for now for health reasons, but the clinic remains open with nurse practicioner(s).

Thank you all. We apologize for being a few days late with the report, and we hope to upload some additional projects soon for rural Haiti.
