Report #7 Providing access to healthcare in rural Haiti

New Years Greetings from the Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (APF) Haiti.

We continue to pursue our mission to provide access to healthcare in rural Haiti. We continue in the midst of a many serious challenges because it is critial to do so. Here is an update on our work in the final months of 2021.

From September through December 2021 ...

362 patients were seen, of which 118 were adults and 244 were children.

As mentioned above, the APF Haiti Clinic serves an important and critial role in the rural region of Fondwa

During the reporting period, a total of 321 vaccines were administered. Due to a fear created of COVID and especially COVID vaccines beginning in 2020, there has been a drop in all vaccine administration. The reality is, however, that sadly no COVID vaccines have been available or administered in the area and in most parts of rural Haiti. If on a scheduled vaccine day fewer patients arrived than anticipated, we pivoted to use the time to offer informative talks on various health-related topics including the importance of vaccines. A total of 162 women participated in these sessions.

Accidents continue to be a part of rural life in Haiti. Several serious accidents were treated during the reporting period including a child who lost a finger in a home accident, a violent machete attack, and several motorcycle accidents. Due to the increase of travel via motorcycle, accidents continue to increase. As a result, APF wants to devote more time to promoting awareness about safety for moto drivers and passengers.

Severe infections also are a persistent part of rural life in Haiti. The clinic saw and treated many. A young girl with a severe infection in her leg was cured. We cannot share the "before" photo because of GlobalGiving's thoughtful and necessary photograph policy. But, trust us, it was extremely advanced and her healing was a great success.

No cases of COVID have been diagnosed in the area, but be assured, the virus is here. There is no way to screen patients, and we rely solely on providing as much education about COVID and its prevention as possible. As mentioned above, in the rural sectors, rumors and superstitions persist about this disease. If people do contract the virus, they rely on natural home treatments.

Other illnesses include persistent cases of diabetes, hypertention, and presence of sexually transmitted diseases (including one case of AIDS).

So, as you can see, Dr. Farda and her staff are vitally important in this rural and remote part of Haiti. They are available 24/7. The current  insecurity in Haiti makes it difficult for rural people to  make the trip to larger cities to seek a hospital. It is dangerous and expensive. The APF clinic is there for them!

Thankfully, you are there for us as well! We ask that you continue to support us in 2022 by making a donation here, or commiting to a monthly donation. Every little amount makes a difference to those who would not otherwise have access to healthcare.

Gratefully,

The APF Clinic Team
