PeaceJam Timor-Leste 2019 is coming up soon, November 9 & 10!
PeaceJam 2019 will be a 300-person two-day conference with 50 mentors/staff and 250 youth. It will take place at Ba Futuru in Comoro with Jose Ramos-Horta, Former President and Peace Noble Laureate providing a keynote speech.
This month we have been working on creating new materials focused on lessons learnt from the resistance movement in Timor-Leste, and in August and September these will be used together with the PeaceJam curriculum to provide inspiration for young people across Timor-Leste. Thank you for making this possible!
This PeaceJam conference, and the related training program, empowers youth to tackle social issues. They learn how to energize their communities to undertake positive actions for gender equality and peaceful conflict resolution. Last year 42 youth-led community service projects across Timor-Leste happened as a part of Ba Futuru’s 2018 PeaceJam program.
This year, the PeaceJam Conference will nod to the past by celebrating and supporting 20 years of independence, peace and security, and encourage change for women and girls in the future with the theme “Equality for Liberty.”
For the PeaceJam conference Ba Futuru is working collaboratively with the PeaceJam Foundation, the Rotaracs (the youth Rotary Club, which are some of the most dynamic emerging young Timorese leaders) and Peace Corps volunteers (young people from the United States who work with local youth leading PeaceJam programming in their placement communities, then accompany some of these youth to the national conference); Dili International School who share PeaceJam programming with their high school age students and encourage them to attend the conference; and well as two local high schools in Dili. During the conference youth undertake action projects to create a positive impact.
After the conference youth are inspired to continue to do service projects in their communities. The timing of this conference in early November will link very well into the lead up to the 16 Days of Activism on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.
