Peace School for Afghan Refugees and Host Communities

Report –Oct 2020- January 2021

Case Study:

Aisha is studying in grade 4. She is the middle child among the 5 siblings. Her mother is a home-based worker and works for a garment factory nearby. Her father is a plumber and works on daily wages. Her mother wanted her children to study well in school and also get some jobs after completing the studies. There is a culture of early marriages in the family and most of the girls got married at the age of 14-17 generally. Her father forced her mother for the early marriage so f the daughters and told her mother that she along with her elder sister will not continue her studies in the future. But her mother resists the view of her husband and discusses it with the school staff to convince and pressurize the father to stop him from his plans. The principal herself met the father and convince him about the significance of girl child education and the country's laws to stop child marriages. Now her father is convinced and the Aisha and her sister are studying in the school. Aisha wanted to become a doctor in the future and wanted to continue her studies. During the COVID period, she regularly sends her work to the school and does all her work on time.

A session with Students on COVD SoPs

The session was held on the COVID SoPs and how to protect the community and the surroundings from the COVID 19. The students were briefed about the precautions and the activities were demonstrated. The students have performed the activities for the other fellows on it. The students were briefed on how to wear mask properly, hand wash, social distancing, use of sanitizers. The students were briefed about the spread of COVID and the importance of social distancing. These exercises helped the students to revise and remind the COVID SoPs.

World Food Day:

Like every year, activities were held with reference to world food day. Students were briefed about the significance of a balanced diet. The teachers have briefed the students about the COVID and its impact on marginalized groups as they cannot get sufficient food for their daily requirements. The teachers have discouraged the wastage of food to students and teach them how to use the natural resources in an effective way.

Global Hand Wash Day

The Global hand wash day was commemorated among the students. The students were educated on the significance of hand wash and particularly in the COVID. The teachers guided the students on hand wash and the students also demonstrated the way to wash hands till 20 seconds. The hand wash sachets were also distributed among the students.

Sharing the experiences some of the students said, they don’t have soaps at their homes many times and they just wash their hands with water. In the households where the provision of basic necessities of life is a real challenge, the heads of the families count such things as luxury and often came under their priority list.

Science Experiment:

The science experiments held with the students from grades 2-5. The students learned about the windmills and the use of batteries as a source of energy in the experiments. The students learn how to generate energy from the battery and the use of energy and how to save energy as well. This experiment helped the students to better understand and relate the theory in the textbook and practical.

Drawing Session:

The drawing sessions were held with the students to engage them in extra-curricular activities. The students from the prep to 2 classes were assigned for the drawings. This activity helped them to remind the color names and express their emotions through the drawings. The teachers also brief them about the coloring and shading of the objects before their activity.

Staff Meeting

Since the government has notified that the schools will be resumed in 3rd week of January. The staff meeting was held to discuss the reopening strategy of the school. It was discussed that how to review the schedule of the school after the children will resume. The children in the community came from underprivileged backgrounds so it has been observed that most of the children were not that efficient in the studies when they came back after the first lockdown. So it was decided to start revisions from the first chapters and extra classes for the students in the schools.
