MaMa is a 36-month program that seeks to address malnutrition and stunting by focusing on a child's first 1000 days of life or from inception to two years of age. The program is anchored on supporting a pregnant mother's antenatal needs, as well as ensuring the newborn's nutritional needs are met as the child completes his/her first 1,000 days.
Undernutrition prevalence in the Philippines has shown almost no improvement over the past three decades. According to a 2019 report by the World Bank, one in three children (29%) younger than five years old suffered from stunting (2019), or being small in size for their age. Undernutrition robs other children of their chance to succeed. An alarming magnitude of malnutrition and stunting can be catastrophic for a developing country's future workforce and economy.
Believing that good nutrition is a foundation for a country's economic prosperity, the program is anchored on supporting a pregnant mother's antenatal needs, as well as ensuring the newborn's nutritional needs are met as the child completes his/her first 1,000 days of life. The first 1,000 days of a child's life (F1KD), starting from conception and extending up to the child's second birthday, are widely recognized as a critical period of development.
