At the Katsushika Friendship Run Festival held in March 2025, while supporting the event as a medical runner,
I performed life-saving measures on a collapsed runner and was able to save their life.
In recognition of this,I was presented with a letter of appreciation from the Mayor of Katsushika Ward.
The lifesaving measures performed by the patrol members this time are as follows.
11:20
Near the 20.8km mark, someone shouted, “There's someone collapsed!” Mr. Usuyama, Mr. Shirasawa, and Mr. Uehara, who were nearby, rushed to the scene.
At the scene, spectators along the course were calling out to the collapsed runner.
The person requiring aid exhibited gasping, death-struggle breathing, and was judged to be in a dangerous condition. Mr. Shirasawa immediately began chest compressions (CPR).
Mr. Uemura arrived at the scene shortly after. To secure an AED, Mr. Uehara headed towards the event headquarters, while Mr. Uemura headed towards the first aid station.
11:23
Mr. Usuyama made multiple calls to the event headquarters but could not get through.
Meanwhile, Mr. Uehara secured an AED at the event headquarters and hurried back to the scene.
Meanwhile, Mr. Uemura encountered a mobile team carrying an AED at a tent near the 18.9km mark and requested they rush to the scene.
(Ultimately, the headquarters' AED arrived first, so the mobile team's AED was not used.)
11:24
Mr. Usuyama decided to call 119 and requested an ambulance.
The fire department headquarters instructed them to send footage of the scene via smartphone, sharing the situation through video.
Based on this footage, a fire department officer instructed, “Perform deeper chest compressions,” which was immediately relayed to the on-site team.
Multiple individuals, including Mr. Shirasawa, took turns performing chest compressions, while Mr. Uehara and others administered electric shocks using the AED.
During this time, other event staff and medical runners used blue tarps to shield the scene, ensuring privacy.
Subsequently, the fire brigade on standby at the event headquarters arrived at the scene and took over the rescue efforts.
11:31
A call came in from the ambulance en route to the scene, reporting the condition of the casualty, the status of the AED operation, and the local response situation.
Two to three minutes later, the ambulance arrived at the scene, and the casualty was promptly transported.
From the Tokyo Team Representative
A person lying unconscious before us.
The gravity of that situation is beyond imagination.
I am truly proud of them as colleagues—for calmly considering what they should do in that situation, and then taking swift action.
