Building Stronger Families

By Roberta Donkor | Manageress

Strong families begin with open communication, understanding, and trust. As part of our efforts to strengthen families and keep children safe, 378 caregivers (311 Females and 67 Males) within the Adaklu district were trained on Positive Parenting and Effective Communication.

Through personal storytelling, participatory discussions, and practical group exercises, caregivers reflected on how their own childhood experiences continue to shape the way they raise their children. Many recognized that harsh disciplinary practices and poor communication can create emotional barriers between parents and children, making it difficult for children to seek guidance when they need it most.

The training encouraged caregivers to adopt positive parenting approaches that foster love, respect, and open dialogue within the home. Participants learned how to listen actively to their children, respond with empathy, and create safe spaces where children feel comfortable discussing personal challenges without fear of judgment.

These skills are especially important as children transition into adolescence. Caregivers were encouraged to have open conversations about puberty, menstruation, and adolescent reproductive health, ensuring that girls and boys receive accurate information, emotional support, and guidance during this critical stage of development. When parents listen without criticism and respond with understanding, young people are more likely to seek advice, make informed decisions, and manage menstruation and other adolescent reproductive health issues with confidence and dignity.

To sustain the impact of these trainings, continued support is needed. This includes providing transportation for caregivers to attend training sessions, developing and printing training materials and parenting guides for participants, facilitating regular refresher sessions, and supporting community follow-up visits to reinforce positive parenting practices. These investments will help caregivers consistently apply what they have learned, strengthen family relationships, and create safer, more supportive home environments where children can thrive.

By strengthening communication within families, we are helping caregivers build trusting relationships that not only protect children from harm but also empower them to navigate adolescence with confidence, dignity, and the support they deserve.
