On May 29th, we got a call from San Jose Animal Care and Control. They had an injured "wedding release" pigeon with paralyzed legs that stuck out in front of him. He was transported to the hospital room at Care Director Jill Shepard's home. Not long afterward, we were alerted to another struggling survivor of a "dove release," this one at Oakland Animal Shelter. Avian veterinarian and Palomacy Board member Dr. Holly Galusha had brought her home from the shelter to keep a close eye on her. This little white pigeon, called May, was wobbly and could barely walk, with suspected metal poisoning. Jill agreed to take her in and help with her recovery. We see sad cases like these all the time, as innocent birds pay the price for human indifference or greed. The prognoses for Dennis and May weren't clear, but Palomacy is here to help birds like this, to give them every chance at recovery.
Then something happened.
From his hospital cage, Dennis saw May.
And May saw Dennis.
Now, if you spend any time at all around pigeons, you know that love is the engine that drives them. Every pigeon has a massive, intensely emotional heart, and needs somewhere to park it! Slowly Dennis and May started working on standing, then walking a few steps, never far from each other. As their love blossomed, their bodies strengthened. They may always have some special needs, but if they have each other their lives will be full.
