Humanitarian Assistance in context with Build Back Better Pakistan

Pakistan experienced an unprecedented disaster as a result of a combination of riverine, urban, and flash flooding caused by torrential rains. The devastating flood caused by heavy rains hit Pakistan in June-October 2022. As reflected by figures from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) are estimated to have affected over 33 million people or one out of every seven people, have been affected by the floods including nearly 8 million displaced.

FACES Pakistan made efforts through humanitarian assistance during emergency response, and early recovery while currently in the rehabilitation phase. Following are the areas where FACES Pakistan doing efforts:

  1. Immediate need for shelter was addressed through the provision of 2500 tents to provide shelter needs of marginalized families
  2. Immediate need of food/rations were provided to 2600 marginalized families
  3. Considering the unhygienic situation hygiene material included soap, toothpaste, brush, Soap, Towel, Comb, Nail Cutter, mosquito repellents & Nets etc.) A total of 3600 WASH kits were distributed.
  4. 30 Free Medical Camps were organized to provide health services to the underprivileged community. Hundreds of people in targeted areas are facilitated through medical checkups and free medicine.
  5. The flood has not only caused death losses of cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and donkeys but has also washed out the poultry and fish farms. Animals surviving floods are prone to several diseases and toxicities. Due to evacuation, relocation, starvation, feed changes, and mixing with other animals along with other factors increase livestock’s vulnerability to different threats that can lead to outbreaks of diseases, particularly infectious diseases. Considering the situation FACES Pakistan aimed to organize 20 veterinary medical camps in the targeted localities.
  6. Considering the clean drinking water FACES Pakistan established 10 water filter plants
  7. FACES Pakistan also put resources to restore the livelihoods of 1500 identified marginalized farmers through the provision of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), seeds and nitrogen fertilizers additional relief through the provision of facilities such as tube well reaping and in some cases providing tractor rent to meet the requirement of land plowing.
  8. The majority of marginalized flood-affected families need winter clothes according to the situation they need warm clothes to keep them safe and warm in winter months to keep warm in the winter temperatures. (Warm clothes (Dresses, Sweaters/ Warm Shawls) were distributed among 1500 families.
  9. Community-driven execution through community participation is our approach and considering the destruction of homes FACES Pakistan is also contributing through the reconstruction of houses (One Core room and Toilets). More than 150 homes are under construction.

The deluge submerged us in the grave psychologically

Alia is a widow her husband’s name was Habib (late). Habib was a fisherman who died during the flood in 2022. Alia has three kids two sons Faheem (13 years old and in need of an eye operation that requires more than half a million cost) and Zaman (11 years old) but both are special kids (Pre Natal Causes) and a daughter Faiza (5 years old). The family already facing downheartedness because poverty persists due to many reasons and after the death of Alia’s husband poverty further increased because they have no such source of income. FACES Pakistan’s team visited the house and recognize the vulnerability and tried to help the marginalized family. At the time of the visit, Alia said “The deluge submerged us. In the grave psychologically” and Alia has no words to say except the tears in her eyes.

Her house was destroyed due to the flood in 2022 all the household items were also shattered. FACES Pakistan’s team tried to support the family as much as they can and now reconstructed her house with one core room and toilet.
