Encouraging Kids to Drink Water

By JiaQi Qian | Supervisor of Partnership Development

According to the Chinese Dietary Guidelines (2022), school-aged children need to drink approximately 800-1400 milliliters of water daily. Many children are unaware of the importance of developing good hydration habits. Additionally, challenges such as inconvenient or unsafe water sources make it difficult for children to consume adequate amounts of water.

Project staff introduced several improvements, starting with the details. Since rural schools are located in different provinces, we needed to implement appropriate temperature control to meet the varying needs of children’s drinking water based on climate, season, and environmental conditions.

The Water purification plan uses heat exchange technology, which is different from the heating and water supply systems found in public spaces like airports. This system separates hot water from room-temperature water, which flows through a heat exchange pipeline where the temperatures are adjusted. The hot water is cooled to a moderate temperature, while the room-temperature water is preheated through the heat exchange process. This ensures that energy is used efficiently, and the water temperature can be manually adjusted according to seasonal and environmental changes, so children do not have to wait or worry about the water being too hot.

The water purification equipment is equipped with multiple high-flow outlets, allowing several children to access water at the same time and reducing wait times during breaks. Notably, the equipment has been customized for safety from the very beginning to prevent risks like children bumping into it. All devices feature rounded, impact-resistant corners and are equipped with smart infrared sensors. When the device is disinfecting the high-temperature pipes, the system automatically shuts down if someone enters the area within three meters, preventing potential accidents. Of course, what children love most is the bright colors and cartoon-inspired design, which transform the large metal box into a friendly blue companion, making it feel more like a warm, helpful friend than an inanimate machine.

Alongside the blue companion, we introduced the “Water Buddy” course. This course covers topics related to water and hygiene health, with a complete curriculum framework. Using fun titles and content such as "Water Buddy's Journey," "Hello, Little Bacteria," and "Gurgle Gurgle, Drink Clean Water," the course teaches children about water resources, water safety, and healthy hygiene behaviors related to water. The goal is to allow students to learn while playing, explore while learning, and develop the correct habit of drinking water. As part of the program, every student in participating schools
