AIDSHope said goodbye to few international team members the last few months. It has been great to see the country open again with schools on 100% attendance however we have our afterschool program in groups as it’s more effective currently and kids progress is monitored very well. While we lost some team international team member, we received 2 local volunteers who stepped in into leadership for our Afterschool program and this is the first time we have local volunteers as Afterschool program Leaders.
Challenges
Though we are thankful that we are still standing and serving the vulnerable, we have to engage in serious fundraising and have a creative way to generate income for sustainability by also involving the community members in organising Children Fun Day where tickets were sold. So we are grateful for this platform of GlobalGiving as the funds we are receiving from here are playing a very big role in the work we are doing.
Some short stories from Afterschool program.
Sello[Not his real name] grew up not knowing why he is the only one taking ARVs since it wasn’t explained proper by the guardian and at times he stopped taking his medication since the reason was not known and unclear. We had a few conversations with him regarding the medication that he wasn’t taking regularly, with the advice of asking right questions, Sello now knows his status and is taking medication with excitement without fear of losing friends
Mino’s [Not her real name] mother passed away due to AIDS related diseases. It was a difficult time for Mino losing her mother, she had to take time off from Afterschool Program as she had to go to another province to bury her mother. Even in a difficult situation, Mino missed being at Meetse and was looking forward to coming back and joining other kids in the afterschool program.
These are 2 different stories from many other stories we have. This shows what challenges the kids we have at the Afterschool program as well as how different each circumstance of each child is.
