ACTIVITY REPORT OF THE GIRL’S EDUCATION SPONSORSHIP PROJECT

REPORT COMPILED BY MARGARET ACAYO

PROGRAME COORDINATOR

Introduction

The Girls Education Sponsorship is a sub component of Feed Educate Empower Women and Girls of Acholi supported by Global Giving. It is implemented by River Fund HIV/AIDS Family support Women Association a CBO located in Kitgum District Northern Uganda. The River Fund USA provides leadership support.

The project aims to help prevent drop outs of secondary school girls through provision of school fees, sanitary pads and mentoring.

Number of girls under sponsorship.

These are  twelve (12). Seven girls who sat for their O Level Final examination this year while five girls will complete next year 2020.

Payment of School fees.

Fees for all the 12 girls have been fully paid.

School Visits

Mentors made special efforts to visit to the girls sitting their final O level Exams to encourage and wish them success.

Home visit

Lillian a day Scholar at Kitgum Comprehensive Collage, one of the girls sitting her O level exam, was having challenges attending classes. Her mentor, a member of the Women association visited her home to find out what was the problem.

She reported that Lillian beside others chores had to get up very early in the morning to go to the main market every day to buy vegetables for her mother to cook latter on in the day.

After her mentor met with Lillian’s mother, the mother agreed to reduce on the chores allocated to her daughter so as to not negatively affect her school performance.

Increased Enrollment 2020

At a meeting of the women association with the Executive Director and Mama Jaya Canterbury-Counts in Kitgum, it was agreed that the number of students for sponsorship be increased to 20 in the New Year. It was also agreed that parents show their commitments by shouldering some of the expenses like PTA, Remedial lesson/Booster program and others.

  1. Parents tend to abandoned their duties with the expectation that project will cover all the needs of their daughters
  2. The ever increasing cost in tuition fees,
  3. Inadequate funding.

Recommendation

1)   Sensitive Parents on the value of Education and their roles.

2)   Share cost with parents.

3)   Increase in funding where possible.

Conclusion

I wish to extend my appreciation and those of the members to the River Funds team in the USA and our donors on Global giving who are making it possible for us to help the less fortunate.

ACTIVITY REPORT

SUPPORTING FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH NODDING SYNDROME

Report Compiled by Magaret Acayo

Programe coordinator

Introduction

Support to Families of Children with Nodding Syndrome is a sub-component of the project Feed Educate Empower Women and Girls of Acholi funded by Global Giving and implemented by River funds HIV/Aids family support women Association a CBO located in Kitgum District, Northern Uganda. The River Fund USA provide leadership.
Activity; Selection of new banditries;

Given the organization small resource envelope, the Executive Committee of the association decided to reduce the on the current number of households receiving support from 34 to 20.

The exercise of screening the old beneficiaries and identifying new ones was carried out at the beginning of November 2019.

Criterion for selection included:

1)   Ability of Parents/Care givers looking after the victims.

2)   Numbers of victims in a family.

3)   Widows/elderly looking after these children.

4)   Home environment.

Consequently 20 households were selected from the Parishes of Lamola and Okidi covering 11 villages. Previously the project was located in Okidi Parish with 3 Villages.

Below are samples of Victims and households selected:

Homestead of  Hellen. Hellen is a widow with 3 of her Children affected. One of the victim  Pamela 22 years old is a Mother of 2 Children, one is a baby of only 3 months. Pamela was normal but started showing signs of the disease in 2019 with her  second pregnancy. She cannot breastfeed the baby on her own and has to be helped by the mother.

Sarafina a widow of 50 years from L Village.  She is taking care of her daughter who is a victim, she lost two of her children who were also sick. One in a fire and another in a pool of water. Now  she has two to tie up the remaining daughter so that she does not wonder off.

Christine is a grandmother from A Village. She is care taking her Grand Children Denis and Vicky who are both victims. They live a badly leaking hut and are being chased from their home in a land dispute.

CHALLENGES

  1. The villages are far in between and can only be reached through bushy foot paths.
  2. High cost of transport.

CONCLUSION

Parents and victims of the nodding syndrome live in dire condition with “no change in our lives” according to widow Sarafina of L Village. “……….we parents have struggled to look after these children as best as we can but we need help”.

On behalf of these care givers and their charges, we welcome any support that will be given.
