Nurture: Quarterly Report

By Dr Rohit Kumar Kankar | Lead M & E

Executive Summary

The Nurture Program, an initiative of the One Billion Lives Foundation (OBLF), is dedicated to improving the quality of life among highly marginalized communities through integrated support in education, healthcare, and sanitation. Operating in Anekal, Bengaluru, the program primarily works with the Hakkipikki and Iruliga tribal groups, along with the migrant waste picker community in Heelalige. Through sustained interventions, more than 2,000 individuals receive regular access to essential healthcare services.

A key educational component includes a dedicated learning center in the Waste Picker Colony, which addresses learning gaps and facilitates mainstreaming of children into government schools. Art and Craft classes launched in the second quarter introduced structured, creative learning experiences, successfully engaging 20–25 children per session including school dropouts while building confidence, creativity, and social skills. Several out-of-school children have since re-enrolled in formal education.

Program highlights between July and September 2024 include the children’s participation in the SuFC tournament, where the self-named “Power Stars” demonstrated perseverance and teamwork, earning recognition despite resource constraints. The community also celebrated Independence Day with vibrant cultural activities and strong parental involvement.

Individual success stories reflect the program’s impact on re-enrollment, improved attendance, and renewed enthusiasm for learning. Overall, Nurture continues to foster empowerment, self-reliance, and sustainable community development, creating lasting pathways for change made possible through the continued support of donors and partners.
