Support Nearly 3,000 Homeless Women in DC

Since November 2015, 157 donors have raised over $11,200 and purchased nearly as many meals for homeless and low-income women in Washington, DC. Thank you for your support.

People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one.

Ms. Sharon never expected to come from work and see all of her belongings piled up alongside the street. Ms. Sharon and her sisters didn’t realize that their father hadn’t kept up with the property taxes on their home and after he died in 2009, their home was lost. Losing their family home wasn’t the first challenge Ms. Sharon had overcome. She was a childhood trauma survivor and lived with chronic pain due to a significant car accident in 2000.

Able to make ends meet for a while, Ms. Sharon became homeless in 2015. In 2016, she was referred to N Street Village and to Bethany Women’s Center. One day in December 2017, Ms. Sharon saw some of the staff in PHPW crying. They were tears of joy because Sharon had been accepted into N Street Village’s permanent supportive housing program.

N Street Village and Bethany Women’s Center will be here for Ms. Sharon and every woman experiencing homelessness in DC who comes through our doors looking for a meal, support getting back on their feet and something to look forward to.

Sonja’s journey to Bethany Women’s Center started when she was in a physical rehabilitation facility back in the Spring of 2018.

“I had a roommate that I bonded with and she spoke very highly about this place where she lived called N Street Village. She shared the ins and outs of the program. I later found myself at a loss, simply homeless after my stent at the rehab facility had ended. I showed up, did the intake, understood the operation and……. The love began.

I would come and actively participate in the groups, classes and activities. I made friends and gained a lot of inspiration. As I became more comfortable with the ladies and Bethany Women Center staff, I opened up about my housing situation and expressed how desperate I was for housing.

Within days word got around and folks were encouraging me to stay strong and be patient. Bethany staff was even clueing me in on the options available through N Street Village. Well, effective Friday, October 26^th I received my keys to a place of my own.”
