Confident Catrina!
Confident Catrina!

Since November 2015, 178 donors have raised over $67,800 for homeless and low-income women in Washington, DC. Thank you for your support!

People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one. Homeless in 2019, Catrina came to N Street Village through the Patricia Handy Place for Women - a shelter with 214 emergency and temporary therapeutic beds.

She had experienced "off and on homelessness, for over 10 years." She first became homless after "using became the only priority.” Catrina speaks of overcoming many challenges, including a debilitating injury in adolescence, substance use and related barriers, and the sudden loss of her son.

Despite her struggles, Catrina says that her challenges gave her the push to get the help that she needed.  Catrina later transitioned to Permanent Supportive Housing at Phyllis Wheatley (YWCA). Now, she maintains through, in her words, “prayer” and “The 12 Steps.” She says that being at N Street Village has helped her “rebuild relationships” with her children and has helped her “live independently.”

Since November 2015, 176 donors have raised over $12,900 and purchased nearly as many meals for homeless and low-income women in Washington, DC. In December 2019, we celebrated our largest single donation through GlobalGiving - $500! Thank you for your support!

People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one. Village resident and 2020 Annual Gala and Auction honoree, Sharon came to the Village looking for the support she needed to navigate buried mental health challenges.

Leaving an unhealthy marriage behind, Sharon suddenly found herself alone and struggling. Upon finding N Street Village, she was quickly surrounded by an incredible network of people dedicated to providing structure and stability back in her life.

Through programs like the MARJ & MAK Vocational Center, which helped her find employment, Sharon has been able to prioritize herself for the first time in a long time and is confident she is on the right path.

Today, she lives in Permanent Supportive Housing in our flagship location and has a job through UPIC Health. Since the gala, she received a promotion at work and is now working full-time from the safety of home.

"Despite everything, I feel a sense of stability. With the support of N Street Village, I recently got a promotion at work and have been fortunate enough to work remotely through the COVID-19 pandemic."

Thank you for your support in unprecedented times.
Thank you for your support in unprecedented times.

"Our Village has been open every day for 48 years for any and all women in need. We’ve been there through every day of every storm. And tomorrow will be no different." N Street Village's Chief Executive Officer recently closed an email to staff with this sentiment.

In every day since the COVID-19 pandemic started, Bethany Women's Center has been open to meet the needs of women experiencing homelessness. We've made some necessary adjustments, including suspending volunteer engagement and offering nonperishable sack lunches instead of the regular hot lunches. However, essential services are still being delivered.

During this time we have been bouyed by the thoughts and prayers of hundreds, maybe thousands more who are the donors, partners and other stakeholders of N Street Village. The notes of support have been pouring in this past week. Encouragements included:
• I am rooting for all the ladies.
• We look forward to getting back to our regular volunteer shifts at Patricia Handy but know that in the meantime the women and staff are in our prayers.
• You are true soldiers on this uncertain battle. Thank you!
• Thanks to NSV and all the amazing staff that continue to work hard in these difficult times. You are truly on the front lines and your commitment is inspiring.
• We are truly grateful for you and your staff’s dedicated service in these most trying times serving those who are most vulnerable in our society.
• This is a unique challenge in the 48 year history of NSV and we are truly blessed to have all of you at this time.

Please consider making a contribution to support the critical work of Bethany Women's Center to meet the needs of our communities most vulnerable.members. Our per meal food costs are slightly higher right now due to providing packaged, non-perishable options.

Thank you for your support in thoughts or financial contribution.

People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one. Women often come to Bethany Women’s Center for meal and end up connecting to housing and a community that they return to even after their homelessness resolves. Michelle asked to share her story in her own words.

I have been coming to N Street Village for a period of two years. This experience has been a life changer for me, in a number of ways. The staff and friends I have met here have been there for me when I was going thru lots of hard times. I feel very blessed to have them in my life. I met my true Godmother here and sit at my favorite table (table 1 shark table) playing cards and talking trash, though in the spirit of love. I wish to have them in my life for a very long time, and I love them all very much. Thank you N Street Village for helping me get my life back.

People experience homelessness for all sorts of reasons; lack of affordable housing, medical emergencies, job loss, mental health concerns or the death of a loved one. Ms. Jewel asked to share her story with you in her own words.

Hello, my name is Jewel.  When I came to N Street Village, I was a broken woman.  I had experienced so much abuse in all my relationships, and never realized I was abusing myself as well.

N Street Village helped save my life.  Somedays were very difficult, but the staff here embraced, supported and encouraged me.  I completed a one-year recovery program here and decided I was ready to go it alone to face the world.  Little did I know after being 8 years clean and sober that I would need N Street again.

The ladies (staff) here embraced me once again, and guided my footsteps, which required some working on self and following suggestions.  Today I can say, I see much growth after several months of doing the work.  Many doors have opened for me.  There is no place like N Street Village.  The support and love is phenomenal.  I will forever be grateful an indebted to this program.

Today I love who I am becoming and how far I have already grown.  There is no place I’d rather be on my journey to being a self and well-rounded woman.  I owe so much to N Street Village.
