We're back to our building!

Birthday challenge 24h shift at full capacity
Birthday challenge 24h shift at full capacity

On Wednesday 2nd November 2022, our branch turned 69, and to mark the occasion we decided to celebrate by supporting as many callers as possible by running our service at full capacity for almost 24 hours!

Within those 24 hours we:

  • Answered 264 phone calls - more than double our daily average.
  • Responded to 58 emails and 10 webchats - both three times our usual rate; and
  • Got the service-wide caller wait time down to as little as 2 minutes overnight—a time when often only 1 in 3 callers can get through to a Samaritan.

...but at 2am, just as we were heading into the final hours of our birthday challenge, disaster struck! The heavy rains caused a significant leak. It brought down part of the ceiling (thankfully no-one was hurt) as well as affecting the electrics.

This presented a significant challenge for our branch, and it also meant we had to find a temporary location to continue our services.

Within two weeks of the roof leak, we were able to find an alternative location thanks to Arup UK, who kindly offered us a rent-free space to continue our operations. This was a much-needed relief for us as we were able to continue providing support to our callers without any significant interruptions.

After three months of hard work, in mid-February, we were finally able to move back into our home. The repairs to our building were complete, and we can once again provide face-to-face support (which had to be paused while we were at Arup UK).

Our team's efforts and volunteers’ dedication made it possible for us to overcome these challenges… And your donations have helped us going this winter, a time that is difficult for many given the challenging economic circumstances. For many people struggling to cope, ours was the only helpline open when other services were closed. Thank you for your support!
