In a world filled with constant noise, there is something truly extraordinary about the power of listening. For 70 remarkable years, we've dedicated ourselves to listening to people, and it's been an incredible journey.
It all began with a promise from our founder Chad Varah – a promise that no one should ever have to face their darkest moments alone, without someone to talk to. In keeping with that promise, we've been a comforting presence for countless individuals in London and beyond: the suicidal, despairing, and distressed. We've stood by their side, lending a compassionate ear, and making sure they never felt alone.
Today we respond to around 70,000 requests for help each year via phone calls, email and webchat as well as taking our services to vulnerable individuals at highest risk of suicide such as homeless people, people in prison, people in custody and those bereaved by suicide.
Watch here how Samaritans began and the value of being listened to, told by our volunteers.
