Restore School Libraries in 5 Village Schools

On June 24, 2016 with the arrival of monsoon much of Nepal was left grappling with floods. In Nepal, floods are a part of the annual cycle causing property damage and impacting the livelihoods of people every year. Nepalese are more vulnerable to the impacts of flooding due to poorly designed infrastructure and embankments or lack thereof.

The Kavre Distric and home to our adopted schools may have been hard hit during the monsoon season.  The Friendship Bridge near Naya Goan that connects Nepal to Tibet, has been washed away.  This is an example of the power of a monsoon and its ability to change the topography.  In July Sanjeeb, our man on the ground, visited the villages despite a rising river which altered his route back to Kathmandu.  At that time the monsoons had seemed relatively normal in the village including our schools although several attempts to return to the villages have failed due to landslides and bad roads.  Travel plans are in place to visit villages on Sunday August 14th as we are anxious to see the condition of Bindabsini School where our new retaining wall and landfill has been washed away. I'm sorry that I do not have many pictures of children and flooding at this time.  Visuals of the children and school grounds will be provided following our coming visit.

It will take some time for us to regroup from the monsoon landslide damage this season.  Thankfully we were able to deliver six 2000-liter water tanks to three schools that were in grave need of running water.   This fits the old saying, Water Water Everywhere But Not A Drop To Drink.

Local Nepalese managed to build five temporary learning centers (TLC) enabling children to attend school only six weeks after the earthquake had completely destroyed their school buildings.  These are basic structures that provide classroom space but very few comforts. 

The TLC buildings were dark and in need of light for classroom reading and studies.  Low cost light panels were installed to provide the light source to enable students to do school work.  A simple solution for a significant problem.

Library improvements are continuing by providing books, desks & chairs, and carpeting in the library, to provide a more complete and fulfilling school experience for the children.  In March Global Giving's matching program helped us to raise over $6,000 for library improvements which is only $2,500 short of our goal.  Thank You Global Giving for matching our dolars, dollar to dollar and all of you that took advantage of doubling your donlars. 

During the past few months school grounds lost to landslides were replaced by local volunteer labor and CMAF funds.  Golmeshori school is pictured to show the laborsome process of building a retaining wall as the first step to reclaiming the outside play area.  In general at this time the children enjoy very little or no recreational or after school activities. We are working to change that with an after school sport program for boys and girls.
