Nepal Rapid Response Program to 2nd Wave of COVID

Summary

Across the country, people are dying in rural and urban areas alike for lack of basic medical treatment & basic food supplies. Like the devastating 2015 earthquakes, the present COVID-19 humanitarian crisis in Nepal was both highly predictable and without a bold intervention, will, tragically, recur. Similarly, most of the rural women communities of the Terai districts of Nepal have started to reel under the following problems due to the 2nd wave of COVID 19.

Challenge

i. First, the scarcity of food supply following extended government-imposed lockdown amid 2nd wave coronavirus pandemic to the rural women communities who are the daily wage workers. The rural women and girls communities residing in those Terai regions have been facing an acute supply of food of late as there is no vehicular movement along with these rural areas. Meanwhile, marginalized and under-resourced communities have warned that the extended lockdown could cause famine in the areas.

Solution

i. Provide the families with basic food items like rice, pulses, lentils, cooking oils, salts, milk, grams, etc. & other rations for at least a month. ii. Make a proper arrangement for quarantine and isolation facilities for the rural women and girls who are affected by the virus and need immediate health support from the concerned local health agencies. iii. Provide kitchen, cooking and serving utensils, disposable plates/cups for on-site cooking, if required for those who are in quarantine.

Long-Term Impact

By providing food & health support in the time of the pandemic, we believe that these kinds of supports will not only protect them from the worst of the pandemic's socio-economic effects, but it will also ensure their families and communities can continue sustaining themselves and their communities and help build thriving rural economies. We definitely can make their lives better by joining hands & working together for the common cause of saving more lives of women and girls.
