NaijaCoder organizes a free, intensive summer program in Nigeria to teach introductory computer programming to high schoolers and provide resources for students to apply to universities. Programming offers these students, especially those from indigent backgrounds, an opportunity to learn profitable skills and ignite their passions for problem-solving and critical thinking. With programs in Lagos and Abuja, NaijaCoder has taught over 100 students to date, and is hoping to expand to Kano in 2025.
The majority of Nigerian high schoolers have little to no exposure to the basics of algorithms and programming. We believe this trajectory should change as programming offers these students, especially those from indigent backgrounds, an opportunity to learn profitable skills and ignite their passions for problem-solving and critical thinking.
NaijaCoder teaches the foundation of computer science, emphasizing practical applications of computer science and experiential learning. The program includes free lunches, laptops students can use, transport subsidies, and free educational materials (such as textbooks, notebooks, and pens). The program also connects students to university application resources such as EducationUSA and the GIVEA, to empower them to further their education. Instructors serve as life-long mentors for students.
We hope to galvanize students' passion for problem-solving, augment their university applications, and provide mentorship opportunities as they continue their educational journeys. In 2024, of the 5 highschool seniors that attended the program, 3 were award full scholarships to US universities. Education can further social mobility, and when one student gains such an opportunity, they carry their family and love ones with them.
