The work of DARE Network is challenging. The environment is rough and sometimes dangerous, the people are in general traumatized and the resources are limited. Our frontline workers are fearless and dedicated to serving their fellow refugees to prevent addiction and treat substance abuse. But who supports them?
In Mae Sariang, a small town on the edge of the Thai/Myanmar Border is the DARE Network Home Office. Here a staff of 6 people work together to manage the affairs of DARE Network. Their roles are that of Director of Programming, Saw Law La Say, who has worked for DARE since its inception 17 years ago; Det Sot our Addiction Services Manager, who travels up and down the border to the refugees camps bringing supplies and solving problems; Kiri our Logistics Manager, who spends her time sending support and herself back and forth across the border; Saw Major is our Assistant Program Manager for the Thai Side of the border.
New to our team are Saw Day Wah and Naw Muh Muh. Day Wah with a University Degree from Chiang Mai is taking on our Admin position to deal with the day to day workings of the Thai Government. Muh Muh is our new accountant, who has an accounting certificate.
DARE Network operates like a family. Although everyone has their particular jobs, we all help each other. Right now Kiri and Law La Say are training Muh Muh on our accounting software and Major is training Day Wah on the complex operation of DARE Network. Later, Day Wah will stay in the refugee camp for a period of time to learn more about addiction and see how what he does impacts the addiction clients in the camps.
In Chiang Mai, the big city 3 1/2 hours from Mae Sariang is our colleague Khun Sivalee represents us to the high levels of the Thai Government department that controls the refugee camps. She is a nurse who has a background in Addiction Treatment using traditional means. Sivalee has been with DARE Network since the beginning.
It is a great team and the backbone of the program.
