Hands of Mercy is a charitable organization whose major objective is to give care and support to senior citizens in a high density area called George Compound, Lusaka, Zambia
Hands of Mercy included their orphaned grand children because the elderly have suffered mental health due to physical and emotional abuse from their own grand children.
The elderly suffered torment by being assaulted, raped and being called a wizard.
Hands of Mercy has continued to make good use of the sewing machines donated by Bank of Zambia by training the youths a tailoring skill.
With this skill, we are able to take the youths off alcohol and drug abuse. They become responsible and productive to their families and the nation at large .
17 youths have since completed their basic training and are able to put food on the table reducing stress upon their grandparents and also reducing alcohol and drug intake upon themselves.
Out of 11 youths who have been struggling with drugs, 3 have gone for rehab and 2 have since died from alcohol and drug intake without taking food.
The 6 are still on and off drugs and we still try to do our best by conducting:
On going therapy.
Encouraging them to practice what they enjoy most, for example, painting, taking them out to movies, eating out, so that they are in contact with the world again.
Hands of Mercy is proud to have enrolled 43 youths and are to start in January 2025.
SUCCESSES
Through the unwavering support of our partners and well-wishers:
We have fully trained 31 youths and have successfully done away with alcohol and drug abuse.
We have bought a piece of land with the intention of building a rehab center .
CHALLENGES
We still have not raised anything through GlobalGiving, that's why we are still struggling to implement the desired goals.
Lack of inadequate training materials
Inadequate funds to pay our 2 trainers
Lack of funds to build and furnish our rehab centre to a 5 star facility.
SUCCESSES
We have made positive impact impact on the youths.
Hands of Mercy have gained confidence in the community because of our commitment , resilience and passion.
We have trained successfully 17 youths and these are able to put food on the table reducing mental health on their grandparents and themselves.
CONCLUSION
Hands of Mercy shall continue with My mental health, my Wealth Campaign in George Compound and beyond.
It is very gratifying to know that as hard as it may be, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
