Help PS 84 Rock the School Year!

By Krystal Valentin | Development and Marketing Associate

PS 84 wants to produce a musical this school year.
PS 84 wants to produce a musical this school year.

Your support has been vital to the success at our newest Brooklyn partnerships during the past year. You are making a difference, which is evident in the following reflections from PS 84’s first-grade students and one of its classroom teachers:

In reference to music class:

“I like music class because it’s really fun and we get to play with the instruments.”

In reference to the music concert:

“I am happy that my parents can come…they get to see me and my whole class perform.”

In reference to music in general

“Music helps me learn new things.”

“Music makes me feel proud of myself.”

In reference to music’s impact on other academic classes

“Students learned to be more focused in class. They learned how to work together in a group. Their math skills improved a bit, because they were often asked questions where they had to count or measure beats, especially with fractions.”

As summer vacation draws to a close, PS 84 is preparing for the start of school by assessing its stock of instruments, supplies and instructor materials. For example, the school, which has a keyboard room, will be adding keyboard materials and books to better utilize the room for instruction.

The school will also add more drums and Orff instruments for general music instruction to engage students in participatory learning. In addition, PS 84 is interested in doing a musical production this school year, which will require buying the rights to a show and providing set design, costumes and props.

Thank you for playing a part in making this project possible. We encourage you to share this report with friends and colleagues who might be interested in supporting music education in New York City.

We are excited to share developments and news from our Brooklyn partnerships, and will update you once the school year starts.
