AnnieCannons February 2016 Report

By Laura Hackney | Executive Director

Greetings all! Thank you again for your continued support and encouragement of our pilot program. Since 2016 is already speeding by, we wanted to send you an update on our program, our partnerships, and our plans for the rest of this year.

The students in our first class have worked through the first 5 units of our course. We have covered personal finance, basic digital literacy, the foundational concepts behind the Internet and computer programming, the Software Development Lifecycle, Quality Assurance testing, and computer markup languages (HTML and CSS). Our students are now working through our JavaScript module, and will be working on coding their first interactive websites in the next couple weeks! We are thrilled with their progress.

During our pilot, we have identified housing stability as the biggest barrier to success in our students’ daily lives. We are currently building public partnerships with the San Francisco City Supervisor’s Office, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Office of Senator Diane Feinstein’s office. We are also starting to work with larger companies like Sabre, Google, and Coca-Cola to see how we can leverage their infrastructure to help survivors of trafficking rehabilitate.

Moving forward, we are formally launching our Developer Alliance! The Developer Alliance is a path for our students to start learning real-life skills in technology as well as earning an income.  We are recruiting talented female engineers from around the Bay Area (and sometimes nationwide) to work with our students on our client’s projects. Our team at AnnieCannons develop relationships with clients who need websites, mobile apps, data entry work, and software testers. We will break those projects up into discrete tasks and offer them to the Developer Alliance as paying contract projects. We will then let our students participate in product planning and quality control meetings and watch how developers code more complex pieces of software alongside working professionals. Our students will earn for work in data entry and software testing immediately, and over time, transition to working on higher paying projects as developers themselves. Our Developer Alliance presents an opportunity for female software engineers, product managers, and designers to work on great projects, help our mission, and participate in a workspace that provides community, childcare, and other services not typically found at a traditional technology company.

Your donations will help us fully launch this community as well as financing our trainings. We hope you will let us know if you would like to participate in the Developer Alliance!

2016 is off to a great start. So glad you are on the team.

All my best,

Laura
