Capuchins on the move

Negra and Chamaquito enjoy semi-freedom together
Negra and Chamaquito enjoy semi-freedom together

Dear Supporters,

The move from Machia to Jacj Cuisi is chugging forward.

In the past few months, we have successfully relocated the first group of capuchin monkeys. Mostly from Machia’s “Clinic” area, these monkeys needed to move urgently, because mudslides were making their area dangerous. They made the 33-hour bus journey across Bolivia and initially spent some time in Jacj Cuisi’s quarantine, while their new area was being completed.

The capuchins at Jacj Cuisi have the opportunity to enjoy a runner system, as they did at Machia. The one big difference is that the runners are located in dense jungle, away from any roads and tourists. Each runner is very long, more than 15 meters, starting at eye level and extending up to the tree canopy. The team managed to create 21 runners so that the 11 monkeys housed in the quarantine can be placed on a new runner every day. Surrounded by Jacj Cuisi’s 300 hectares of pure jungle, stunning landscapes and wilderness, the move was well worth the long bus ride!

Meanwhile, the squirrel monkeys have completed the last stage of integration to semi-freedom, in which they only enter the enclosure for food. The doors to their enclosures are always left open and they have the choice to sleep inside or out in the trees surrounding their area. From the treetops of Jacj Cuisi’s “Mystic Cove,” the little giants have been enjoying their freedom, jumping from branch to branch and finding appetizing insects, butterflies, etc., under the leaves.

In their semi-freedom, the squirrel monkeys regularly encounter the spider monkeys that made the move from Machia last year. While there have been some little skirmishes among the groups, they mostly seem quite happy and we have also witnessed some surprising cross-species friendships. In particular, little Chamaquito now spends much of his time playing with the spider monkeys Lola, Estrella and Negra. He even sleeps in Negra’s enclosure at night, cuddled up to her in a hammock!

We are now raising the funds to move the second group of capuchins from Machia. We have created a micro-project page here to raise $10,000 for their area at Jacj Cuisi. As you’ve probably heard, next Wednesday is GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day! This is the best time to make a larger donation ($100 to $1000) if you can.

Thanks so much for supporting CIWY’s rescued animals and keeping up with their big move to the Land of Dreams.

Kindest regards,

The CIWY and FIWY teams
