Jacj Cuisi is living up to its name as the “Land of Dreams” to the rescued animals who have moved there from Machia.
The squirrel monkeys, for example, have adjusted better than we could have hoped with their new management system.
It took them a few weeks to get used to their new routine: eating breakfast all together in their management cage and then having the opportunity to be free in the jungle, alongside the spider monkeys. Food is always available in their enclosures and they have the option of coming and going as they please throughout the day, and returning to their enclosures to have dinner and spend the night.
The amarillos are so eager to explore and enjoy the Jacj Cuisi jungle, that they are usually out from first thing in the morning until late at night. They are sometimes reluctant to come back at dinner time, even though bananas are always served!
They are undoubtedly pleased with the freedom that the jungle gives, and they enjoy hunting insects, looking for their own wild fruits, chewing fresh leaves all day long, getting lost in the tallest trees, stealing food from the plates of the spider monkeys, and, of course, playing with each other and with the spider monkeys, especially the younger ones (although they also like to tease them a little!)
This life of “semi-freedom” is truly a gift for these monkeys who were robbed of their wild freedom by poachers. It warms our hearts to see this group of orphans come together as a troop and engage in natural behaviours in the beautiful Jacj Cuisi jungle.
Our work is far from over, of course. The capuchin monkeys at Machia need to be transferred soon, as mudslides make their area there even less hospitable. The team is reevaluating which monkeys to move first and we may even need to keep a group in a smaller temporary structure at JC while we wait for Mirador 1 to be built.
