Summary

Years of conflict in Ethiopia have devastated health systems across Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, and Benishangul gumuz leaving women and children in rural and internally displaced communities without access to lifesaving care. This project will deploy mobile health clinics to reach 250,000+ vulnerable individuals, with a focus on maternal, newborn, and child health, as well as psychosocial support, basic treatments, and reproductive services.

Challenge

Across northern and central Ethiopia, conflict and displacement have destroyed over 3,000 health facilities, leaving an estimated 10+ million people without access to basic health services. 70%+ of facilities in conflict zones are non-functional (UN OCHA, 2024) 1 in 27 mothers dies from childbirth complications in rural Ethiopia Over 35% of under-5 children in target regions are malnourished Most IDP sites lack skilled birth attendants or trauma support

Solution

Over 4 years, NODRO will: Deploy 7 mobile health clinics across Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, and Benishangul gumuz Reach 250,000+ patients, prioritizing mothers, newborns, and children Provide prenatal, postnatal, and childcare, immunizations, nutrition support, and SGBV response Train 150+ local health workers to continue care in remote areas Offer referrals to hospitals for critical cases through coordination with regional health bureaus and integrate mental health support

Long-Term Impact

250,000+ patients served with life-saving care 20,000+ safe births supported in mobile units 150+ local health workers trained for long-term care 30% reduction in preventable maternal and child deaths in target areas Increased health service access in 30+ remote or displaced communities Strengthened referral networks and emergency response capacity
