Highland Support Project in partnership with AMA (Asociacion de Mujeres Altiplano) aims to empower midwives and doulas in rural areas of the Western Highlands of Guatemala. This initiative seeks to combat maternal and infant mortality rates by training doulas to support new mothers, disseminating critical skills, and fostering a strong network of health professionals and community members.
In rural Guatemala, particularly in the Western Highlands, maternal and infant mortality rates remain disproportionately high due to limited access to quality healthcare services. A lack of trained professionals, cultural barriers, and sparse coverage create an environment where maternal and infant health are at risk.
Our project aims to re-establish the ancestral practices of mutual support networks under the Mayan K'iche term "Ixo'q Tob'anel"-the woman who helps. The doulas will undergo training to offer a range of critical service, including creating support groups, conducting workshops on prenatal care, breathing techniques, and breastfeeding, and establishing a network with healthcare professionals. Additionally, the project will provide emotional support and accompaniment to new mothers.
Empowering midwives and doulas can have a transformative impact on maternal and infant health in these communities. The project aims to train a sustainable network of doulas, who will continue to grow and share their expertise. This will contribute to lower maternal and infant mortality rates and create a more resilient, supportive community network for women and their families.
