This serves as final report of the completion of MHP repairs in Adugao and Kimbutan in Northern Luzon instead of the MHP rehabilitation in the island of Rapurapu in the Bicol Region Southern Luzon Philippines which was overran by mining operations up to the present.
Way back in 2012, the Binosawan community were excited that rehabilitation work for their typhoon-damaged microhydro power could already be started. The long dream to produce ice blocks for their fish catch would soon happen with the MHP restored back to normal. Consultations were made, workplans were laid and work committees were arranged to take on civil work activities. The excitement was short-lived. La Fayette mining operating in the area which was suspended for fishkills, erosions and river pollution in the tiny island sold its franchise to another company and mining resumes operation. Not wanting to lose again their rich fishing ground and rivers, the people of Binosawan resumed their anti-mining campaign and MHP rehab was postponed indefinitely. With this,SIBAT opted to utilize the funds to rehabilitate other MHP's needing repairs and upgrading especially those more than 5 years in Northern Luzon. As a result, two MHPs in Sitio Adugao, Malibcong Abra Province and Kimbutan,Dupax del Sur Nueva Vizcaya province both in Northern Luzon Philippines had their electro mechanical devices and civil structures fixed and upraded.
The alternator and generator of Adugao's 7.5 kW MHP were repaired and electricity were restored for rice milling, household and street lightings. Eighteen households of the community continue to enjoy the benefits of their rehabilitated microhydro power.
Kimbutan's previous 3 kilowat MHP system has been upgraded to 7 kws providing light to 32 households. Power is being earmarked aside from lighting to power a planned rice mill.
This is to thank everyone who gave the donations initially intended for Binosawan MHP but due to the peoples priority to oppose further mining operations, rehabilitation work was halted but instead redirected to other MHP projects. SIBAT decided to use the funds to two other sites enumerated above for the repair work. Thank you for bearing with us and our sincerest thanks for all your support and understanding in this regard.
